Husch Announces Not Running for Re-Election
Herndon Town Councilman Dennis Husch announced Monday he will not run for re-election during the 2010 council elections. Husch said some of his most memorable moments working as a council member have been the times he has been able to recognize significant people from Herndon's history. "The naming of this room for Mary Ingram, that was certainly a big deal," he said.

Sledding on a Snow Day
Darian, 15, watches her younger brother Maury, 8, as he dives down the hill on his stomach near the Herndon Fortnightly Library on Wednesday. Though they are home schooled the pair, along with brother Brandan, 10, and friend Brendan, 10, took a hint from the countywide snow day and spent part of the day sledding in downtown Herndon.  According to forecasts the snow will continue falling through the weekend.

COMMENTARY OF THE WEEK:
When I recently spoke at a meeting of the Dulles Corridor Special Study Task Force, I was given a list of planning principles to guide our discussion. I made some editorial changes to that document and I would like to share my reasons for those changes with the community.

A Filibuster on a Platter Three Cheers for the Republicans!
The news this week that the GOP upset the Democrats by seizing the Massachusetts Senate seat held by the late Edward Kennedy was absolutely stunning. That seat had been in Democratic hands, and held by the Kennedy family, for decades. To their credit, the Republicans saw an opportunity, honed in, stayed focused and completely whipped what looked like a lackluster and tepid Democratic campaign.

A Lifetime of Traveling, Moving

It's been a long trail for my wife and me over the past 43 years we have been married. We've lived in five states plus the District of Columbia. I have worked for five newspaper companies, including USA Today and The Observer Newspapers, and Betsy has been an insurance adjuster, a tax preparer, a financial para-planner, and a newspaper sales representative before becoming part owner of The Observer Newspapers.

Christmas Bars and Cookies Make Great Gifts
Some of the very best gifts are the edible delights from your own kitchen, because nothing tastes as good as homemade Christmas cookies. Every time I taste a superb cookie or bar cookie, I always ask for the recipe. We were on a chase for the Saltine Recipe, because nobody knew who brought these to the pot luck we attended. These are so simple, yet there is an unmistakable appeal with the sweet paired with the salt of the cracker. (These go fast in my house.)

The Counter Offers Burger Lovers Plenty of Options
The Counter is the latest entry into the burger restaurant category. They offer 9 oz burgers (they weigh 8 oz. after cooking) as well as a grilled chicken sandwich (a half chicken breast) and a turkey or veggie burger. They grind 80/20 beef every day (20% fat, the agreed culinary choice of fat to lean ratio for taste, if not health) and form it into burgers. They let it rest overnight so it will hold its shape when cooked. The beef in their burgers is excellent, moderately seasoned and very well cooked.
