Editorial
The Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority last week announced its plans to increase the tolls on the Dulles Toll Road to fund rail to Dulles, and in the same motion cemented a future of transportation tolls for generations to come.

COMMENTARY OF THE WEEK:

The actions that Herndon's elected officials take with regard to planning and developing the land on Herndon Parkway adjacent to the proposed Herndon Metro Station will affect the future value of every residential and commercial property in our town.

It's Got to Be True
A few days after the King of Pop passed away last week, I checked out some of the major news Web sites to see how they were handling the ongoing coverage of Michael Jackson's unexpected death.

The Tough Are Getting Going

A week ago I dropped my wife off for a doctor's appointment. I noticed, as I pulled in, a group of youngsters washing cars for whatever money they could get. I thought it was a good way to lop off a half-hour wait so I pulled up and asked them to wash my van.

Senior FocusRestaurants Offer Warm Welcomes to Seniors
Rising food and gas prices are hitting families hard. Many are seeing the value of their houses decline. Some worry about possible job loss or cutbacks. So it's not surprising that optional expenses such as restaurant meals are one of the first budget cuts made. It doesn't take a survey to see that many local eateries are less crowded.

Great Grilling Begins With Marinades
Some of the best grilling recipes I have discovered begin with a great marinade. With just a few basic ingredients—soy sauce, lemon juice, herbs, olive oil, and fresh garlic—an ordinary piece of beef, chicken or pork is turned into an extraordinary meal. If you start with a vinegar or lemon juice, add your choice of oil, and kick up the flavoring with fresh minced garlic, you cannot go wrong in creating your own home-style marinade.

Not Cut Out to Be a Fugitive
I was off to Vancouver. I arrived at the airport excited about the opportunity to see Canadian bacon in its natural habitat. I handed my passport to the ticket agent and she said, "Your passport has expired." I looked at her as only someone who was blinded by his own self confidence and lack of insight would, and replied, "Oh, no it's not."

Local Favorite, Cheng's Still Satisfies
Cheng's Oriental Restaurant, at Countryside on Route 7, has been a local favorite since 1988. Its founder, Louis Cheng, has been deeply involved with the restaurant since its inception. Cheng's has always been among my favorite Chinese restaurants in the area west of Tysons. It may be the best Asian restaurant this side of the Potomac.

Why Buy a Real Estate Investment Today?
It's no secret that real estate has been beaten down, with national home prices having declined 26% since peaking in the second quarter of 2006, according to the Case Shiller index. But to paraphrase the late Tip O'Neill, "all real estate is local." And unless you want to buy high and sell low, the best time to buy a real estate investment is when prices have been beaten down.
