| Let
the People of Reston Have a Voice |
| To the editor: |
| Should Reston incorporate as a town? Does it make sense
for a "town" of some 60,000 residents to take charge
of its own affairs and, well, become a real town? Would a
government closer to the level of the people, a town government,
be more responsive to its citizens? |
| Would a town government best represent the interests of
the citizens of Reston in regional affairs—rather than deferring
this power to the county and hoping for the best? Would a
town government best enable Reston to control its own future
development? And who should get to answer these questions?
Why not the citizens of Reston? |
| If you believe, as I do, that the citizens of Reston are
best qualified to answer these questions, I urge you to sign
the Reston Citizens Association-led "ResTOWN" petition
at go-restown.org. The petition simply asks the Virginia legislature
to approve a referendum so we can decide whether or not to
be a town. |
| Most of us like to have a say about how we live our lives
together in a community—that's the essence of being a democracy.
But the citizens of Reston won't get to have a say unless
a referendum is approved. So, please sign the petition and
let's have an open discussion of how best to answer the questions
above. Let's let the people of Reston have a voice. |
