Election time, and the large dose of vitriol in recent letters to the editor from the usual suspects was probably to have been expected, but it is hard to imagine how a Town Council could have more effectively discharged its mandate: tax rates held, there was no irresponsible increase in the 2007-2008 operating budget, residential over-occupancy decreased, and the misuse of public funds on an unwanted day-labor center with its sanctuary overtones ended.
The encouragement of citizen participation in the legislative process appears to have been exemplary. Under the even-handed and efficient leadership of the personable mayor, the governance of the Town of Herndon has come a long way from the feckless hand-wringing of the previous council. Any new council would have to work extraordinarily hard to match this council's level of achievement.
